College football kickoff

For the three-day Labor Day Weekend, many will watch college football players begin their season’s labor.
The 2017 season gets going Thursday on ESPN when second-ranked Ohio State visits Indiana at 8 p.m. FoxSports1 offers Oklahoma State against Tulsa at 7:30 p.m.
Rutgers battles Washington on FoxSports1 Friday at 8 p.m. and it’s Wisconsin-Utah on ESPN at 9 p.m.
Top-ranked Alabama and third-ranked Alabama begin their season in Atlanta Saturday at 8 p.m. on ABC. Penn State meets Akron at noon, with a top 25 battle between Florida and Michigan from Cowboys Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
Notre Dame faces Temple on NBC at 3:30 p.m.
Oklahoma clashes with UTEP on Fox at 3:30 p.m. and Purdue plays Louisville at 7:30 p.m.
ESPN starts its day at noon with Kent State-Clemson, then goes to Charlotte for South Carolina against N.C. State at 3 p.m. Georgia faces Appalachian State at 6:15 p.m., and the day closes with BYU-LSU at 9:30 p.m.
Maryland meets Texas on FoxSports1 at noon and it’s Washington State-Montana State at 10:30 p.m.
FedEx Field hosts Virginia Tech and West Virginia Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and Texas A&M clashes with UCLA from the Rose Bowl on Fox at 7:30 p.m. South Carolina State faces Southern on ESPN2 Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The weekend closes Monday night when Tennessee takes on Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
The NFL preseason closes Thursday, with the Redskins meeting Tampa Bay at 7:30 p.m. on Comcast.
The Orioles host the Blue Jays for a four-game set starting Thursday on MASN, while the Nationals visit Milwaukee on MASN2.
FoxSports1 offers a pair of contests Saturday, with Cardinals-Giants at 4 p.m. followed by the Angels against Rangers. The Diamondbacks and Rockies battle on TBS Sunday at 3 p.m., and ESPN closes the weekend with Yankees-Red Sox Sunday at 8 p.m.
NASCAR visits Darlington for Labor Day weekend, with the Southern 500 Sunday at 6 p.m. on NBC Sports network. The Xfinity Series goes Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The IndyCar circuit heads to the Glen Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on NBC Sports network.
NBC Sports network carries the Italian Grand Prix Sunday at 7:30 a.m. There’s qualifying Saturday at 8 a.m.
For a different kind of horsepower, NBC Sports network has the Woodward Stakes Saturday at 6 p.m.
ESPN2 has middle rounds of the U.S. Open, with coverage Thursday at 11 a.m. and Friday at 7 p.m. The third round continues Saturday at 11 a.m., with round of 16 play Sunday at 7 p.m.
Netherlands meets Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying Sunday at 11:50 a.m. on ESPN2. FoxSport1 offers Portugal-Faroe Islands Thursday at 2 p.m. and Czechia against Germany Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Golf’s playoff time

The best 130 golfers of the season begin their battle for the top spot this weekend.
The four week of the PGA’s tour Fed Ex playoffs begin with the Northern Trust, with coverage Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. on CBS.
The top 130 in points since the season began got the invite to the Northern Trust. The field shrinks each week, down to the top 30 who participate in the final tournament to determine the championship.
Little League baseball crowns its champion Sunday at 3 p.m. on ABC, matching the winners of the United States and International brackets.
The brackets have their finals Saturday at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. on ABC. The losers of those games play in the consolation contest at 10 a.m. on ESPN.
Thursday has loser’s bracket games on the international side at 3 p.m. on ESPN and United States side at 7:30 p.m. Winners of those games play winners of Wednesday’s games.
The Orioles head to Fenway Park for the weekend to meet the Red Sox on MASN.
The Nationals face the Astros Thursday at 7 p.m. on MASN, then host the Mets on MASN2 Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. FoxSports1 also has coverage of Saturday’s game and ESPN carries the series finale Sunday night.
The Indians take on the Royals Saturday at 7 p.m. on FoxSports1.
CBS has a pair of NFL preseason games this weekend, with the Chiefs clashing with the Seahawks Friday at 8 p.m. followed by the battle of Los Angeles between the Rams and Chargers Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Bears tangle with the Titans Sunday at 1 p.m. on Fox, then the Redskins take on the Bengals. NBC carries the 49ers and Vikings Sunday at 8 p.m.

While NASCAR’s Monster Series takes the weekend off, the Xfinity Series visits Road America. NBC has the race Sunday at 3 p.m, after practice on NBC Sports network Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m.
The Indy Car circuit goes Saturday at 9:30 p.m. on NBC Sports network after qualifying at 7:30 p.m.
The Belgian Grand Prix runs on NBC Sports network Sunday at 7:30 a.m. after practice Friday at 8 a.m.

FoxSports1 has Bundesliga action Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with Werder Bremen against Bayern Munich, followed by Dortmund-Hertha Berlin. Leipzig battles Freiburg Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
The Red Bulls and New York City FC tangle Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN, and Montreal meets Toronto Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
There’s a pair of games on FoxSports1 Sunday, as the Galaxy take on San Jose at 7 p.m. before Portland plays Seattle.
The Sparks meet the Mercury in WNBA play Thursday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2, and Sunday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 it’s the Lynx and the Sparks.
The U.S. Open Series continues with the Connecticut Open on ESPN2 Friday at 3 and 7 p.m., and the semifinals from Winston-Salem are Friday at 9 p.m. The finals are Saturday at 3 p.m. on Connecticut and 5 p.m. on Winston-Salem.
NBC Sports network carries the Diamond League track and field meet Thursday at 2 p.m.

Road to Williamsport

The best young baseball teams in the world gather this weekend in Williamsport.
The Little League World Series gets going on ESPN Thursday at 1 p.m. when Latin America faces Mexico. It’s New Jersey-Connecticut at 3 p.m., followed by Italy meeting Canada and Michigan against Texas in the nightcap.
Friday’s play begins with Australia-Japan at 2 p.m., then Washington clashes with California. South Korea plays the Dominican Republic at 6 p.m. and South Dakota battles North Carolina at 8 p.m.
There’s four games in the loser brackets Saturday, with one on ABC at 3 p.m. and the rest on ESPN. The winners of the first two days will play Sunday, hoping to advance to next Sunday’s final.
ESPN2 has the Junior League final Sunday at noon.
The Orioles return home to face the Angels this weekend on MASN.
The Nationals have a four-game set against the Padres, starting Thursday at 10 p.m. on MASN, and moving to MASN2 the rest of the weekend.
FoxSports1 has the Dodgers’ visit to Detroit Saturday at 4 p.m., and TBS has Red Sox-Yankees Sunday afternoon. ESPN closes the weekend as the Cardinals face the Pirates.

Preseason Battle of the Beltways

The NFL preseason gets going this weekend, with the rivalry between Baltimore and Washington getting things going for those teams.
The Ravens host the Redskins Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Comcast.
Both teams are looking to improve after missing postseason play in 2016.
NFL network has several live games opening weekend, including the Cowboys facing the Rams Saturday at 9 p.m. and the Los Angeles Chargers’ first home preseason contest Sunday at 8 p.m. against the Seahawks.
North of the border, British Columbia clashes with Saskatchewan Sunday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Orioles take a west coast swing, meeting Oakland on MASN2 Thursday
The Nationals host the Marlins Thursday at 7 p.m. on MASN and the Giants come to town for the weekend on MASN.
The Yankees host the Red Sox Saturday at 4 p.m. on FoxSports1 and Sunday night on ESPN. TBS offers Indians-Rays Sunday afternoon.
Little League baseball’s road to Williamsport continues with six games on ESPN Thursday. The day starts with a Midwest regional semifinal at 11 a.m., then it’s off to New England at 1 p.m. and the Northwest at 3 p.m. The Great Lakes regional takes the field at 5 p.m., with Mid-Atlantic at 7 p.m. and West at 9 p.m.
There’s six more games Friday on ESPN starting at 11 a.m., with six more Saturday at 11 a.m.
NASCAR’s Monster Series visits Michigan Sunday at 3 p.m. on NBC Sports network. The Xfinity Series rolls through Mid-Ohio Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on NBC Sports network, while the Truck Series goes Saturday at 1 p.m. on FoxSports1.
It’s time for the final golf major championship of the year, with CBS covering the PGA championship Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

With the start of August, fans can look forward to some form of football on TV every weekend from now until Super Bowl LII in early February.
Assuming the turf in Canton cooperates.
The Cowboys and Cardinals meet in the NFL Hall of Fame Game Thursday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
The NFL moved the game from its former home on Sunday night this year. Last year’s contest got cancelled when due to field preparations troubles with paint on the artificial turf.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be Saturday at 7 p.m. on NFL network and ESPN.
The Orioles host the Tigers in a four-game set, with games on MASN Thursday and Friday before moving to MASN2 Saturday and Sunday.
MASN has the Nationals’ series with the Cubs Friday through Sunday, and TBS carries the Sunday contest.
The Mets host the Dodgers on FoxSports1 Saturday afternoon and ESPN Sunday night.
Senior League baseball has its international final Saturday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2, with the Intermediate championship game Sunday at 9 p.m.
