NASCAR at night

As the time to claim a spot in NASCAR’s playoffs winds down, the teams head to Thunder Valley this weekend.
NBC Sports network has the Bristol night race Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Xfinity race goes Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Eleven drivers have claimed victories so far this season, with races left in Bristol, Darlington and Richmond before the final 10 races. Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson have already posted four trips to Victory Lane before the wins really count down the stretch.
There’s qualifying for both races Friday at 3:30 p.m., after practice starting at 9:30 a.m.
Across the pond, NBC Sports network brings the Belgian Grand Prix Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and practice Friday at 8 a.m.
The IndyCar racers hit the track Sunday at 2 p.m. on NBC Sports network. There’s qualifying Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Orioles have a four-game set with Minnesota on MASN. The Nationals complete their road trip in Colorado Thursday on MASN2, then host Milwaukee for the weekend.
The Pirates host the Giants on FoxSports1 Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 8 p.m. on ESPN. The Tigers face the Rangers Saturday at 7 p.m. on FoxSports1, and TBS offers Dodgers-Astros Sunday at 2:10 p.m.
The best Little League teams in the world gather in Williamsport, starting Thursday at 1 p.m.  on ESPN with Uganda against Dominican Republic. Oregon meets Texas at 3 p.m., followed by Venezuela-Australia at 5 p.m. and Kentucky-California on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.
Friday’s play begins at 2 p.m. on ESPN with British Columbia battling Mexico. It’s South Carolina against Rhode Island at 4 p.m., then Taiwan-Japan at 6 p.m. and Pennsylvania facing Missouri in the nightcap.

Woods has been trying for his 15th career major since Obama took the oath of office in 2009. TNT has the first two rounds Thursday and Friday at 2 p.m., then CBS has coverage Saturday and Sunday starting at 2 p.m.
Rory McIlroy returns from injury to defend his title, while Jordan Spieth goes for his third major of the year. And Woods will try to find his youthful form one more title.

For football fans, the drought is over.
There will be some version on NFL football in action each weekend until February 7.

NASCAR at night

If you want to make NASCAR’s Chase for the Cup, you have to shine at night.
There’s three night races left and four spots left before the 16-car chase, which features race winners this season plus the tops in points among non-winners. Twelve different drivers have locked in their places, and the rest will continue the battle Saturday in Bristol.
ABC has coverage at 7:30 p.m.
Jeff Gordon leads the pack with three wins after taking the Michigan race, with Dale Earnhardt Jr, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson close behind in points with three trips to Victory Lane also.
Nationwide racers hit the track Friday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
The Formula One racers will be in Belgium Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on NBC Sports network. There’s practice Friday at 8 a.m.

FoxSports1 shows Braves at Reds Saturday at 7 p.m., and the Angels and A’s close the weekend Sunday at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Johnny Football heads to D.C.

Will Johnny Manziel have a big impact in his rookie season?
Monday might be a time we’ll find out.
Manziel and the Browns close the second week of the NFL preseason Monday at 8 p.m., visiting the Redskins at FedEx field.
The Browns dropped their preseason opener 13-12 to Detroit, with Manziel completing seven passes for 63 yards and rushing six times. RGIII and the Redskins opened the preseason with a 23-6 win over New England.
With most teams using their third preseason game to set the season’s lineup, the battle between Manziel and Brian Hoyer should keep interest late in the second half.
The Ravens make their first visit to Jerry’s World, facing the Cowboys Saturday at 7 p.m. on Comcast.
ESPN starts the weekend Thursday at 8 p.m., with the Jaguars against the Bears. Fox has the Chiefs taking on the Panthers Sunday at 8 p.m.

This weekend is his last chance for number 15 in 2014. If he can play.
Coming off an early exit last Sunday, Woods will try to win the PGA championship at Valhalla.

Speed will be rebranded as Fox Sports1 on Saturday, and sister channel Fuel TV will become Fox Sports2.
UFC gets primetime coverage Saturday, after some practices before the NASCAR race in Michigan. There will be new studio shows as the new network gets ready for football season.
ESPN has the NASCAR race from Michigan Sunday at noon. The Nationwide racers are in mid-Ohio Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
There’s a pair of preseason games this week on ESPN, as the Chargers meet the Bears on Thursday and the Redskins face the Steelers at Monday night.
Comcast shows the Ravens hosting the Falcons Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Fox brings two contests, with Tampa Bay at New England Friday at 8 p.m. and the Colts facing the Giants Sunday at 7 p.m.
The Arena Football season ends Saturday with Philadelphia facing Arizona on CBS at 1 p.m.
The Nationals host San Francisco Thursday at 4 p.m. on MASN, then travel to division-leading Atlanta for the weekend. The Orioles finish a two-week stretch against the NL West, facing Colorado on MASN2.
It’s another weekend of Yankees-Red Sox – Saturday afternoon on Fox and Sunday night on ESPN. Fox also features Diamondbacks-Pirates and Cardinals taking on the Cubs. TBS shows the Dodgers in Philadelphia Sunday afternoon.
Action begins in the Little League World Series Thursday at 1 p.m. with an international contest on ESPN. Washington plays Texas at 3 p.m., then it’s off to ESPN2 at 5 p.m. for Australia-Mexico before Tennessee meets the Connecticut entrant at 7 p.m.
Friday, there’s an international game on ESPN at 1 p.m. before California takes on Michigan at 3 p.m. ESPN2 shows the Czechs against Japan at 5 p.m., and it’s back to the big stadium at 8 p.m. for Delaware-Iowa.

Junior League softball crowns its champion Saturday at 5 p.m. on ESPN2, and the Junior League baseball final will be Sunday at 10 a.m. The top Senior League teams meet Sunday at 2 p.m.
The English Premier League starts a new season this weekend, with three games on NBC Sports network and Swansea City vs. Manchester Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on NBC. NBC Sports network starts Saturday with Liverpool against Stoke City at 7:45 a.m., and Sunday there’s Crystal Palace-Tottenham at 8:30 a.m. before Chelsea faces Hull City at 10:55 a.m.
D.C. United travels to Montreal Satuday at 7 p.m. on Comcast, and NBC Sports network has Philadelphia against the Red Bulls Saturday at 8 p.m.
CBS has the Wyndham Championships PGA event Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. The top amateurs battle for the U.S. title Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m. on NBC.
The tennis tour heads to Cincinnati ahead of the U.S. Open. ESPN2 has coverage Thursday at 1 and 9 p.m., then there’s quarterfinal play Friday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The semifinals are Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m., then CBS has the men’s final Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ESPN2 brings the women’s final at 4 p.m.
The U.S. Gymnastics championships will be Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. on NBC Sports network. Competition continues Saturday at 8 p.m. on NBC, with the final events Sunday at 1 p.m.

Major excitement

Time for the final major championship of 2013.
Will Tiger Woods win his 15th major this weekend?
The PGA championship tees off Thursday at 1 p.m. on TNT.  There’s more action Friday at 1 p.m., and the third round begins on TNT at 11 a.m. Saturday before CBS takes over at 2 p.m.  Sunday’s final round starts on TNT at 11 a.m., and moves to CBS from 2 p.m. until the trophy presentation.
Woods’ 61 in the second round at the World Golf championship last Friday heightened expectations as the best golfers gather at Oak Hill. Jack Nicklaus’ 18 career majors stands just beyond the horizon, but a Woods win to close out the 2013 season revs up the chase.
The NFL preseason kicks into high gear Thursday when the Bengals face the Falcons on ESPN Thursday at 8 p.m. Comcast has the Redskins’ opener against the Titans Thursday at 8 p.m.
The Orioles continue their west coast swing in San Francisco, with games on MASN2 Friday and Sunday. Saturday’s game is on Fox, along with Rays-Dodgers and Twins against White Sox.
ESPN features Tampa Bay at Los Angeles Sunday night, while TBS offers Tigers-Yankees Sunday afternoon.
Washington hosts the Phillies for the weekend on MASN.
Little League baseball’s Road to Williamsport continues Thursday at 2 p.m. with a semifinal of the Great Lakes Region on ESPN. The second semifinal is on ESPN2 at 7 p.m., sandwiched between semifinals from the Northwest at 5 and 9 p.m.
There’s five games on ESPN Friday, starting at 11 a.m. with a Mid-Atlantic semifinal. The Midwest crowns its champion at 1 p.m. before the second Mid-Atlantic semifinal at 3 p.m. At 7 p.m., it’s the Southeast championship and the West semifinals are 5 p.m. on ESPN2 and 9 p.m. on ESPN.

NASCAR heads to the hills of Bristol this weekend, racing and banging on the high-banked half mile.
ABC has coverage starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. With three races remaining until the Chase for the Cup, 10 drivers can clinch their spot in the 12-member field. We’ll see how many cars survive the night on the short track.
The Nationwide drivers go under the lights Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
The Indy Car circuit visits Sonoma Sunday at 4 p.m. on NBC Sports network.
Little League baseball crowns its champion this weekend. Mexico plays Panama Thursday at 4 p.m. on ESPN for a spot against Japan in the International final, and the second United States qualifier (either California or Texas) will claim a berth Thursday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
ABC has the International final Saturday at 12:30 p.m., followed by the United States final at 3:30 p.m. The champion will be crowned Sunday at 3 p.m., after ESPN shows the consolation contest at 11 a.m.
The Nationals visit Philadelphia on MASN this weekend, while the Orioles host Toronto on MASN2.
Two contenders for the National League wild-card berths battle when Atlanta heads to San Francisco Saturday at 4 p.m. on Fox and Sunday at 8 p.m. on ESPN. Fox also offers Twins at Rangers and the Cardinals taking on the Reds. TBS has the Angels meeting Detroit Sunday at 1 p.m.

Missouri schools Staley and Lee’s Summit West play at 3:30 p.m., and South Carolina’s Byrnes plays Oscar Smith in Virginia at 7 p.m. ESPN2 heads west at 10 p.m. Saturday as Santa Margarita of California plays Arizona’s Brophy Prep.University School of Florida meets Ohio’s Trotwood-Madison Sunday at 3 p.m. on ESPN, while ESPN2 offers Alcoa against Maryville from Tennessee at noon.
The PGA tour’s Fed Ex Cup playoffs begin this weekend at the Barclays tournament. CBS has coverage of the top 125 golfers in this year’s points Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
The road to the U.S. Open concludes with tournaments in New Haven and Winston-Salem. The women’s tournament coverage from New Haven starts on ESPN2 Thursday at 1 p.m. with a quarterfinal, then ESPN2 moves to Winston-Salem at 3 p.m. for a quarterfinal. Friday, there’s women’s semifinals at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on ESPN2, with a men’s semifinal at 5 p.m. CBS airs the finale from Winston-Salem Saturday at 12:30 p.m., and ESPN2 crowns the champion from New Haven at 3 p.m.
